As a former shy guy, i'll tell you that the main thing "we" worry about is not being accepted. it's an actual disorder, which the name escapes me...it's the unwillingness to be social unless you're sure everyone in the group will accept you.
well, i'm over it, and i'll tell ya: just talk to the guy. i'm sure he's not antisocial (they rarely are). good luck with this.

Just go with the flow but just make sure you dont make him feel more shy there he already is.

Go up and say hi, then start a conversation about something you know he is interested in. That's the easiest...if you don't know what he is interested, start talking about weather, holiday season, anything that sparks your interest and see if he knows anything about it.

approach him nicely, with a smile on your face, say "hi' and go on....just try not to be pushy...go little by little...
