You can not always tell if your baby has an earache. However, some common ways to tell are if your baby is running a fever, is fussy, tugs or rubs at his ears, and isn't eating or sleeping normally. Ear infections often occur during or after babies have had a cold with a stuffy, runny nose.

usually they will pull on the ear that hurts or rub it alot... they can also get really fussy, stop eating, or run a fever. if you see any of these signs you should go to the doctor as soon as you can.... but if they can't tell you whether the ache is from a bacteria or a virus then I would wait to give them the antibiotics until you see if it will get better on its own... most ear infections go away with tylenol and rest and antibiotics will do more harm to your child in the long run

I have been in child care for over 20 yrs. And almost always, they will be fussy, and pull at, rub, or mess with the affected ear. Almost always, a fever...low grade at first. OH! And if they do not want to 'lay' down to sleep...if they are tired, and trying to sleep but awaken when laid down, (Laying down causes discomfort) this will also indicate an ear ache. Good luck!

Definitely tugging or rubbing the ear. Also check for fever. A lot of times a fever will accompany an ear infection.

they could pull on the ear, sometimes you can smell the ear and it will smell bad, if the nose is running and they are crying alot and you can't get them to stop it could be an ear ache/infection.

depends on the age of the baby, if you are talking about a baby who has developed their motor skills then they would point at the ear, hit their head or pull their ear
while other babys less than 4 months, would usually scream and move feet rapidly

it depends on the age...when my daughter was tiny...she would rub that ear against whatever she could...when she got older, she would pull at it...now she just yells "hey mom, I have another ear infection".
Look for the baby doing things not "normal" for him or her.
