From what I read in this article the answer is; yes it can play japanese imports, but it seems like only Nintendo first party games such as mario/zelda/wario/metroid and such will be garunteed region free while some third party developers may put a region lock on their games . . .

I actaully think you might ... I was reading that one of the two console that just came out is a universal disc reader. So you might be able to. Check you manual and see if there is anything about Regions on it. North America is apart of region on. If it only has region one then it is a no.
