.....did your parents do things like make you a skateboard out of a 2x4 and discarded roller skate wheels, or try to make "cool" clothes on a sewing machine so that you could be "just like the other kids"? And you didn't want to hurt your parents feelings, so you felt obligated to use or wear these items, and it just made it that much more obvious how much you were NOT like the other kids......

yeah, my mom made me some ugly a** clothes, my goodness. Once i had to make my own halloween costume (a butterfly) out of used posterboard and leotards that hadn't fit for at least three years, which was funny, because I lived in the ghetto, I actually had the best costume!

As children I nor my siblings knew we were poor. We were told "no" and that's how it was. We didn't question it too much because we weren't "the boss". Children today don't know what "no" means. I had a happy childhood in spite of not having the neat stuff that a few other kids had.

I wouldn't say my parents were poor, I would say us kids were poor. My stepmom would buy Nordstrom clothes for her kids (my half sisters) and we were lucky to get goodwill. She was a crazy ***** from Chile though. We were white step kids and that doesnt fly in their culture I guess. So we had the rags and the little kids had the riches. I will never do that to my kids, that's for sure. They will come first always.

No, my mother never put any effort forth into making me anything that other kids had. Fortunately, though, the kids that grew up with me on my street were very close to my family and were very considerate. If they had something that I didn't, they would always let me take turns with it. Our street was like one big family. And today, 30 years later, we still talk quite often.
