Is it really true - six degrees of separation is everybody on Earth?

If you knew everyone who personally knew:

someone who personally knew
someone who personally knew
someone who personally knew
someone who personally knew

someone you know,

...that you would know the whole world?

I don't think it's about personally knowing someone, but I think it's about connecting with people. Not like people you've passed on the street, but people you've met throughout your life, and yes, I think it could be true.
