I have been sick with flu-like symptoms for 3 days. My grandsons had it first; dirrea, volmiting, low-grade temperture. Since they were better in 2 days and I'm still sick, my daughter thinks its a new diabetic (Byetta) medication, which can cause the similar side-effects. I've been on the new medication for a month and I haven't shown any problems until now. Coud I still have the flu?

You can get a different strain than what you are vaccinated for. The strains keep on changing.

The symptoms you describe are typical of a viral gastrointestinal infection and although this is often referred to as the 'flu' it is not influenza. Influenza is a potentially serious upper respiratory infection and the influenza vaccine is typically 50 to 70% effective although this varies from person to person and from year to year. Diabetics are at increased risk from influenza so I am pleased that you had the vaccine. For those who have not received the vaccine it is not only not too late it is a fine time as influenza has yet to make much of a presence. The vaccine offers protection within 1 to 2 weeks and as influenza continues through March and in some areas April there is plenty of time. I certainly hope that you are feeling better very soon and I wish you a lovely Holiday and New Year.

That does not sound like the flu to me. Influenza is a respiratory virus. You didn't mention malaise-general body aches, high fever, or headache. It also doesn't sound like your grandsons had the flu either. This all sounds like a stomach bug given the nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and duration. Your's could be a worse case or the medication: Byetta. In either case, it should get better over time. Just make sure you don't get dehydrated and your temperature doesn't continue to rise.

Yes, there are many, many strains of different kinds of flu. As I understand it, the Centers for Disease Control try to figure out which strain of flu will be prevalent for the coming year, and then in turn let the drug makers (the people who make the vaccine) know. So, you may have the immunity built up for several different strains of flu, but maybe not the one that is occuring now at home. Hope you feel better soon, drink orange juice (if it's ok with your diabetic diet).....best of luck to you.

you can DEFINITELY still get the flu. One year I got 5 flu shots (because my med records were never updated) and I still got the flu. In fact, it was the worst case of the flu I ever saw or experienced.

Flu shots only protect you from certain strains of the flu. If you're exposed to a different strain, you'll still catch the flu, and the severity of your symptoms will depend on how soon you react and how strong your immune system is - not the fact that you've got a shot already that year

It most likely isn't the flu. Unless you had the flu virus in your system since before you had the shot, which is unlikey considering its been a month. You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. You should go to the doctor just to find out what it is.

Yes. It's just like an insurance policy. Just because I have car insurance doesn't mean I won't get into an accident. The flu shot is an attempt to build up antibodies, so that your body will fight it off if you come in contact with flu. It doesn't guarantee that you won't get it.

Yes you can still get the flu. The shot is only for specific types of flu viruses and you can get another type of flu.
