Nope. it wouldn't be abandoned property and you aren't allowed to open it.

You ahve to give a reasonable time to have hte owner retrieve it (about 30 days) and then you'd have to turn it over to the police so they can get ahold of the owner. If they dont or are unsuccessful, then at that time you can calim ownership. But you're looking at up to 3-6 months to do so.

What happened to possession is 90% of the law?
Open the safe & see what's in there.
It could be drugs he stored at your house! Or counterfeit $$$. You have a right to know & protect yourself.

Why should the guy care if it's open when you gave it back...you aren't stealing it.

in order for you to claim it as your own you must have made a valid attempt to contact the owner and have proof.. newspaper ads (of a certain size).. phone records.. certified mail..depending on where you are... they would have acertain amount of time to reply..and if they don't in the allotted time, it's yours... the safe is essentially taking up space..and you are only mandated to "store it" for a certain amount of time for them... before claiming it as your own..

Yeah, more info, but the answer that says you have to turn it into the police is wrong. You don't have to do that.

So if I leave my clothes at my friend's house, they become his? Not so much.
