Or should I take the test a second time? I took 540 on critical reading

On a 1600 scale, 630 would be about the 85th percentile. That isn't too bad. Your reading is in the 61st percentile, and you total about the 75th. I took the ACT twice before I went to college, and one thing I will tell you is, they only care about your final score. I would surely take it again.

Averages on the test are around 500 or a little higher. So a 630 is better than about 70% of the kids who took the test (it should explain this on your report form).

As long as you are not trying to get into engineering or the Ivy league or Duke or Stanford, this score should be good enough to get you in most places.

Why not keep working, and then try it again. Maybe you'll do even better!

630 is a good score. It's well above average.

Whether you should take it or not depends on where you are applying to school.

A good idea would be to check out the schools you are applying to and see what kind of average SAT scores they have. If your score is near or above the average, you are good to go. If not, do some preparation with a Princeton Review book or course and take it again. Don't just take it again with no preparation or you will likely get close to the same score.
