Yes!!

It's good for you, and teaches you self sufficiency, as well as an appreciation of the environment.

It doesn't make you a better person. It makes you are better travelled person but I've backpacked loads and met some absolute idiots. I guess for me I have learnt independence and I have some great stories but I'm also poorer and always restless to get away again.

I think backpacking opens our eyes to other cultures and more often than not, makes us realise how lucky we are. It's certainly making me more patient and self-sufficient and the memories I have of this last year will stay with me forever. It teaches us not to take things for granted.

No, I don't think so. It makes me fairly cranky. Seems to be much easier if you are a guy.
Travel and expanding ones perceptions - now that makes you a better person by far.

YES!!!!!! It is the best thing that you can do to broaden your horizons! You become more tolerant of other cultures and customs and forces you to Survive! You meet so many people from different places that have diferent points of view. Sometimes we get stuck in the way things are here in the US and they are does so many different ways all around the world.

Travel in general makes everyone better. If it was a requirement for presidents to spend a year in a country before they invade it, there would be no wars.

Maybe it does. Travel broadens the mind. Hopefully it teaches you to be more tolerant of other people/cultures.
