I just did another pair on myself yesterday.
First I cleaned the area with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), then I used rubbing alcohol to clean the piercing studs, they should feel like the tip of a needle. Then I got an ice cube and held it on my ear for about 1 minute, marked the area with a skin marker so I know where to pierce, then while my ear was still numb I pushed the stud through. The only time it'll hurt is if you're either going crooked, you're on a vein or the cartilage is thick. I did mine on my earlobes though so the pain was just about non-existant. So if it starts to hurt, hold the ice on it a little longer.
As for infections...I know a lot of people say don't use alcohol or peroxide...but honestly, for me those two have been the only thing to help. And I know some other people have used the antibacterial solution the piercer will give you and they've said it didn't get rid of the infection. It may be different for you though. If your skin is more sensitive or you're prone to more infections and bad ones, then the alcohol and peroxide may not be for you.
Always keep dirty hand, or your hand in general away from a fresh piercing and allow it the proper amount of time to heal.

All non ear lobe piercings should be done by a professional piercer. Sure you know about infections and how to decrease risk of getting one, but do you know about anatomy and proper placement or piercings and what jewelry to use? Do you know where you should pierce so you don't cause scarring, rejection, unnecessary pain or nerve/tissue damage? Do you know all the aftercare instructions for each different piercing as well as when they should be healed?
If you cannot answer all of those questions, you should just save your money and have a professional pierce you. Free kits will not only be poorly made, but will also be dangerous to use. I think that if you go to a professional, you will not only be avoiding a number of problems, but you will find that piercers exist for a reason.
Note: Someone said they did their piercings on their own. I wonder if they are aware that alcohol really doesn't sterilize and kill all bacteria and germs. Rubbing alcohol really just removes surface filth and nothing more. Some people are lucky, others...not so much.

Don't use a piercing kit. Go get it done professionally. Yes, it's more expensive, but you're paying for someone who is trained to do this & knows way more about it than you do. You should never get anything pierced with anything other than a professional's needle.

@ home.. needle (sterile)
2 ice cubes (one in front of lobe one in back of lobe)
alcohol and cotton
clean ear lobe with cotton and rubbing alcohol
place needle into a small bowl w/alcohol to sterilize
freeze earlobe with ice cubes
push needle through and place earings in
keep clean with alcohol three or four times a day until healed about 2-3 weeks.
I did mine that way never got an infection and they never closed..

Why do it yourself? If you can afford the kit, you can afford to pay someone who knows what they're doing...god forbid you want it to do you and your friends...that would be just icky.
