Well i would not do it personally.
I just decided that if they did it, and the baby had something wrong would i keep him?
I would keep him no matter what, so no need to do it,
and in doing the precedure, and they found something, what would that change for me?
Nothing , i already know which docotrs i am gonna use and where i am gonna deliver so it didn't matter.
I think the risks far out weigh the benefits, personally
But its up to you.
Good luck
Meg

I was scared too. I had one done when i was 33 weeks to see if my son'd lungs were developed. I had to sign a paper before they done it and when you read all the stuff that can happen that makes you not want to do it. But i did. They stick the needle in as they do an ultrasound on you at the same time so they can see where the needle goes so they won't be hitting the baby with it. I watched the ultrasound cause when i seen that needle i turned and asked the nurse to hold my hand.
It was over and done with in like 3-4 minutes then they will monitor you for about an hour.
Just take someone in with you so you can hold their hand, it takes the being scared away.
Good luck and congrats

YES! They are risky! Ask the doc to spell it out before you have one. Like, is it absolutely necessary. My cousin had an amnio and they told her that she would not carry to full term, her baby would die. If it did survive, it would be very deformed. Well, they were wrong! She had a healthy baby girl at 8 pounds 2 ounces and 19 inches long. She is now in 3rd grade and very normal. Top of her class! They did an article on her in the local news paper when she was born and have done 2 follow-ups since.
If your doc doesn't give you what You consider a good reason, don't have one. They can lead to miscarriage.

The thing to think about here is. What am I going to do with the results. Unless you plan to terminate the pregnancy in the case of unwanted test results is it even worth the cost of having the procedure. The procedure could cause you to leak amniotic fluid and worst case cause miscarriage or pre term labour depending on how far along you are. If you are going to carry your child no matter what I would skip on the procedure. Ultrasound are wonderful and I would just stick to that.

Are you going to abort your infant if he/she has a sickness? if you're gonna abort then you definately haven't any determination yet to have the checks yet if you're gonna keep and love your new child regardless then why problem your self? If the outcomes do no longer replace your ideas about your new child then do not get them performed. I absolutely have heard from the midwife i had with my daughter that the needle try they stick on your abdomen is risky and can want to reason a miscarriage or a disorder to a different smart healthful new child. also slightly one with purely downs syndrome isnt quite that undesirable. they could communicate, some are even actors. for my section there are might want to worse defects than slightly one with down syndrome and purely bc the try comes decrease back effective does no longer mean the new child might want to have it. imagine lengthy and puzzling about this.

I wouldn't do it. I've heard too many bad stories. My friend had it done and her baby died at 5 months being pregnant she still had to deliver a dead baby.
Look at this way, the test is to see if the baby has down syndrome if it does are you going to keep it anyway. Why take the chance if it's not going to change you mind about anything. Good luck!

It's not "standard procedure" they give you the option to have it done, theres a risk of losing the baby. No matter how slim I don't think it's worth the risk.

I had one with my daughter and I was nervous as you could imagine. Needles do not bother me generally but the thought of them accidently hitting my baby with a gigantic needle did. The lady that performed my amnio really helped me through it though. She was wonderful and made me feel much more comfortable but it was still scary.
With this pregnancy I opted not to have it. I decided for myself that it was not worth it for me. I would keep my baby regardless of the results anyway so why put myself through it.

there are risks involved with an amniocentisis and my opinion has always been not to have one done It doesn't tell me anything I need to know about my baby so I have never seen a reason to have one done so I would think before I had one done (or any other test done for that matter) if it would change anything

There is a very, very minor risk - not even worth considering. You don't say why you are having it done, or what difference the result would make to you. If the answer is none whatsoever, then why do it?
