Tannenberg. At the start of the war, Russia invaded East Prussia, now part of Poland. The Germans concentrated their outnumbered forces and destroyed the central Russian corps at Tannenberg.

Well...between August 17 and September 2, 1914, there was the Battle of Tannenberg, which resulted in the defeat of the Russian forces by the German ones. This is a village in Poland, also known as Stębark.

The defeat iyou are thinking of is probably s probably Tannenburg, but there were other engagements at that time.
