Need a place to stay (preferably rent a unit of furnished apt/hdb flat) for 1 month starting the 18th of December in Singapore - for a holiday. Any ideas on where to get hold of a place ?

For one month you should find a friend you can stay with. Singapore is more a transit place for travellers catching their flights home or taking a short stopover. There are lots of budget hotels in Singapore especially in the red-light area who are willing to consider special rates for long term stay. Many HDB home-owners are not allowed to rent out their rooms and many don't due to the danger of harbouring illegals which may land them in jail.
For long stay, I suggest you head to Thailand where A frame huts by the beach costs a few dollars a day.
