I just want to knwo what a hub assembly is...i know it's for the tire and i know i need to have my left one replaced, it's making a pop pop pop thunk thunk noise and now it's squeaking, so it obviously needs to be replaced but the thing is, the mechanic is giving me a quote of $300, i know it's not THAT bad sounds about right...but i tried looking up hub assembly at autozone to see if i can get the part cheaper or mke sure their not marking it up too high and i don't know which one to choose, the ones i click on say around $60 but they're only charging me $90 for labor, so what gives? i know my car has abs, tht might be it, and i have a 97 chevy cavalier convertible LS in case that helps...someone help me?

the hub assembly is the piece that transfer the cv's torque to the wheel.in you case it will be a splined gear that in turn drives the plate the lugnuts are bolted too. what i would do if i were you, is to get the part from advance/autozone.and purchase the rebuild kits for both sides. (car parts usually wear in pairs, like brakes, headlights etc). the book may run ya bout 20 bucks, and the rebuils kit sounds like it goes for 120 for both sets. following the book you cant repair your hubs and save around 150 bucks comapred to the shop. you can also look into any programs at your local high school, votech, or college, and see if the accept outside jobs.in which case youll usually pay just parts. in this case around 120 bucks, and either way ya go with a school, a licensed pro mechanic will be overseeing the repairs made.

The hub assembly is the wheel bearing and the
wheel hub which the axle bolts to as well as the wheel , as a master automotive technician for 30 yrs, - $60 parts and $90 labor is about right.

If your car is for example, a late model GM with ABS then the hub assembly is a substantial and expensive unit - it contains not just the bu (which the brakes and wheels bolt to) but also the wheel bearings and ABS sensor. Depending on make and model these frequently retail for over $200 with about an hours labor to replace ($80-$100 depending on location).

hub assembley is the wheel bearing unit. It is about a $100 part at most parts stores. $300 is about right if you have to have it done. I did mine myself and I actually got the part for mine for $60. The shop you are going to probably is using delco parts. They are very expensive. Tell them you will buy your own and ask them how much to have them put it in. I bet the $90 labor price will change. Even if they are using delco parts they inflate the part and then make the labor not look so bad.

They'll be fitting a bunch of other parts as well that go along with the hub assembly.
Also the garage won't sell you the part at autozone prices, they'll add there mark up.
Then there is disposal fees etc.

300 is a good price, just pay them to do it, and then if it's less than perfect you can take it back.
