Never get involved, the fight usually snowballs. It's always best to get a parent who can take proper measures.
In my school growing up I know that there was always a bunch of kids that were elected weekly as peer mediators. They got a sash to wear at lunch and it was their job to talk to the students after the teacher broke up the fight. Everybody got a chance to be the peer mediator, and I think it worked out okay, because you usually knew the person who was peer mediator so it de-escalated the situation.

In case I am taller and older than the kids fighting I would take the chair away explaining that fighting over that one chair doesn't make sense, because there are plenty more chairs around. I'd sit down on the chair after that, saying "When two fight, the third one gets lucky".
Might be mean, but works with most kids...

Remove any students around the area of the fight to keep them from getting hurt. Call for help before you interfere. I have seen too many teachers get hurt when they try to separate fights by themselves. Be sure you have the strength to overpower whoever you are about to separate, or you will end up getting hurt yourself.
If you are a student, stay out of it!!! call for help!!
