The new tire, 265/75 R16 looks like it will be about 1 1/4 inch bigger than the other 3 tires.

Last month a local tire store put 1 new tire on the rear of a Dodge truck when the other 3 tires were all also due for replacement. The customer didn't make it 30 miles before he toasted his differential. He is now suing the store that put the tire on even though they advised him he needed 4 new tires and should not do just the one. The store will lose in court too because they knew better but put 1 tire on anyway.

In short, don't do it, even if they let you.

it wont really bother the differential, but what it WILL bother is your wheel bearings.the extra stress on the low side (which would be the shorter tire) and the differing vibrations will in time lead to bearing failure.in so far as to what else will happen on the diff, is the speed sensor may get confused an inaccurately report the speed.best thing to do is to buy new tires the same size, even if theyre used but in good shape, or buy 2 new,and 2 used, all in the same size. you must also keep the tread style same on the axle otherwise youll have vibration.

If the other tires are worn, it will not help your situation. It is better to replace tires, two at a time, if you have to. One tire will wear down faster if it is better than the other three. Good Luck.

YOU MUST be certain the new tire is the same SIZE as the other side , When you have two different sizes the axles try to turn at different speeds -that causes the differential to burn up.
