i went to spend £5 in a shop and gave them a £5 note. they refused it, saying it is out of circulation, therefore illegal, so i had to take it to my own bank to be exchanged/
has anyone else had this problem?

The bank will probably change it for you, but they do not have to. When currency is going to be withdrawn, we are told usually more than a year in advance, and told the date when it will no longer be `legal`. We are also given the time period afterwards that the banks will accept it for exchange, after this date, they do not HAVE to exchange it.
