The war and genocide in Darfur started about three years ago. Some rebel groups in Darfur protested against the current government and the government responded by sending armed militias into villages in Darfur who killed all the people they could find. They would (and still do) ride into villages on horses and burn the huts and slaughter and rape the people. Many people are now refugees because they ran away to avoid being murdered by these militias called the Janjaweed. The government and militias are mostly Arab and the villagers in Darfur are native Africans. There is prejudice against the villagers because they are black and are not of Arab stock. The government wants to kill all of these people and take their land too. The United States imposed sanctions on Darfur a while back under Clinton. But other countries are trading with them (especially China) because they have a lot of oil there. The people in Darfur are being killed on a daily basis and no one is really helping them beyond saying they don't like it. Europe especially is very bad on this issue - they say what's happening in Darfur is "tantamount" to genocide, which means "like genocide." But when they say it in this legalistic way, they don't have to do anything about it.
