I looked in my local paper, and there was a set deal on a service and mot. Altogether 84.99 plus vat. Including new spark plugs, points (erm what ever that is) oil, oil filter, anti freeze and consumables(whatever they are lol). Also free checks and adjustments to brakes, steering, suspension, timing belt, tyres, exhaust, lights, underbody and electronic tuning. Also i said i would pay another 8 pounds on top for an air filter. Does this service sound ok too you, is there something missing that usually needs regular checks. Advice appreciated as i am a female 21 years of age. Obviously you men know better.

thank u people for reading this. mwah xx

They will put very cheap parts and oil in your car and don't be surprised if they don't change your points as they stopped fitting them 100 years ago.

If they do what they say, even with cheap parts it is a good deal.

Don't worry to much when i say cheap parts cause they have to be to a certain standard anyway.

If you have a sports or high performance car then you would have to think quality and then we are talking £££££

Oh don't panic. Yet. The price sounds about right for your engine size and type of car. Just make sure that if you have any parts replaced as part of the service the old ones are put in your boot as proof. (They don't know you've got no idea what the parts are). Also, all MOT stations have had a new computerised system installed which means the Ministry of Transport know what car they are MOTing and at what time etc etc. Also its not uncommon for the garage to be watched by Transport officials and do a spot check on the cars they have MOT'd. Meaning that they shouldn't rip you off on the MOT. I would also ask them to do the MOT first to stop them saying you need repairs when you don't and the re-test is free if it failed anyway so we all win. Hope this helps.

at 84.99 it sounds o.k. but unless youhave a very old car there is no adjustments on brakes or suspensions, steering .etc. Usually garages will find alot more work to do on your car to get it through the mot and they have you over a barrell then. If they tell you the timing belt needs replacing then this is an expensive job, and you should check the manual with your car. Most timing belts are replaced every 70000 miles or so depending on the model of car. Tell them to contact you before doing any extra work on the car, otherwise they will do the work and charge you before you get your car back. Be very clear with them before you leave the car in,

If I were you I would check what oil & parts they will be using to do the service. Good oil alone will set you back between £20 and £30. Cheap oil can be as little as £5! Plugs dont cost much, about £10-£15 a set, depending on your car..... I doubt they will do the "checks" you mentioned, if they claim they have, expect serveral things to be wrong. At a guess, the timing belt as a change of one of them could set you back about £150/£200.

If you have a new car, its not a good deal, if you have an old banger then it is.

Sounds about right.

Points are found in the distributor cap, they basically control the spark sent through to the plugs (to ignite the fuel... blah blah blah) Consumables are items used by the garage to do the service that aren't fitted to the car.

It's a shame they didn't include the air filter but hey, the price is OK anyway.

I think you got a reasonable deal overall though and there's nothing they missed that's usually covered in a service.

For peace of mind next time, maybe ask friends and family if they can recommend somewhere they take their own cars?

84.99 sounds cheap 4 M.O.T and service and especially if they r picking the car up and dropping it off. but as u r not at the garage with the car and wat not they probably wont check the car over properly and find more problems with the car than there was or not at all. if i was u iwould get a male member of ur family to go down to the garage and make sure that they dont do u out of wat they said they were going to do. thats wat i always do and the mechanics at my garage dont find any problems with my car until i went down on my own last week to get an mot and found rust and that i needed a new tyre and ended up charging me £120 4 the work wen there was no work to be done so if i was u i would stick to having a male member taking ur car for a service and mot so that ur not done ovr

I paid 50 quid for my last one. You shouldnt get them to just replace everything if theres nothing wrong with it. Just get a standard MOT and get them to list what needs doing or replacing.

Then when they give you a price for the replacements take your car somewhere else and get a price to compare it with. Then just get the cheapest company to do the work (or tell the MOT place the bloke down the road will do it cheaper and they will drop their price).

Unless your car is very old and you dont look after it then you shouldnt need new sparks, oil etc. It's a waste of your money. You should learn how to check your oil yourself, it will save you lots and stop anyone ripping you off.

it does sound a little cheap to me
1. point they dont have them any more stoped fitting them about 1985
2. consuables this is normaly grease for door locks & hinges, & sceen wash & other topping up fluids.
3. electronic tunig? if the have thright computer for you car but every thing on your car will ecu controlled so i doupt they will do that.
allso cheaking timing belts? if its due you should have this replased if it snaps good by engine!
as far as the rest though possible cheap parts and not very good oil.
all so be very carefull as once they have the car they might say
new suspention is required, brack pads and disks are very low, rear bads are very low,
exhorst is blowing
that is the thing with alot of thease deal it is to real you in

If it's a local garage with only a few branches, they are generally OK. I would avoid garages with chains nationwide. In my experience they tend to find faults that don't need fixing and your cheap mot might end up listing faults costing upwards of £200. Best advice is to find out what garage your local taxi company uses. They know the cowboys out there. regards.
