U2.
it also depends on your definition of successful. obviously both are very famous and probably inspired many younger artists and suchs, but U2 has more influence and a lasting impact on our culture. They are constantly at the forefront of music and at least trying to change things around them for the better. Madonna was a huge success and sex icon of the 80s, but not much of her subsequent work really stands out. I mean, yeah she still has a presence with her 1990/2000s work such a Beautiful Stranger, Ray of Light, and her new Confessions CD, but U2's music reaches such a wider audience.
Commercially, I think I'd have to go with U2 too. They have probably sold more CDs and they even have an iPod dedicated to them.
Musically, I think U2's songs will definitely last in the future generations to come and become classics. Madonna too, but fewer. like "material girl". Like how 15 year olds are discovering hte beatles right now. That's what I see happening to the likes of "where the streets have no name", "one", "pride", "sunday bloody sunday", and "with or without you" just to name a few. These classic U2 songs still get major airplay on the radio today, when i rarely hear Madonna.

Back in the day, Madge of course; didnt even know a U2 song when I in my teens. Fast foward to this millenium, and Madonna is almost becoming a relic, and U2 becoming more relevant than ever! U2 rocks!

U2 in terms of success
Madonna has the "celebrity" status over U2
But U2 (Bono in particular) actually give back more to the people who made them famous in the first place as well as helping those in need

U2--Madonna's only famous because she's always been controversial and likes to stay in the news.

U2s first three albums were great raw, individual rock based on the angst of the troubles in Ireland. The Joshua Tree and everything subsequent is made-for-MTV pop pap.
Madge was vibrant at first, but now just recycles other peoples music, Don MacLean and now ABBA?!
Personally, I hate Bono more than Madge, but am bored senseless of seeing both on my tv, either kidnapping children, or lecturing me on poverty. Both are two-faced egotists, who think they are more important than anyone else, they've been swallowed by their own hype.
You can add Sting to that short list, too.
Give me Pink Floyd any day.
