In Iran, the Church and the State have become one. Nothing happens in Iran's government without the approval of senior clergy.
Think about what the USA would be like if Pat Robertson was in total control.

They are extremely corrupt and very very sneaky. They do a great job at playing Mr. Innocent in the world's eye but at the same time they are building nuclear weapons and helping fuel the chaos in Iraq.
In a way, it's smart of them. Now that Saddam is out of the way, they are taking advantage of the opportunity to increase their position in not only the middle east, but the world too.

Negotiate with government on nuclear issues; leave them alone otherwise. Interference by the US seems to turn them more to the right; they had moderated PRIOR to the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
