This year, I am FINALLY an empty-nesting single Retiree (was a long term single parent to two disabled children), and I am getting :
PEACE AND QUIET -- it is FINALLY just me in my home, and it is so ... how do I say it -- just plainly a pleasure and come home to a house that is peaceful, quiet, nothing broken/damaged, no loads of things to clean or put away, and not having the unending pile of chores to do -- because with just me now -- I FINALLY Can relax because ... when something is clean -- there are no more massive messes right behind it!
Then, after being a Long-term Single Parent, I am FINALLY remembering the one "forgotten" throughout all these Christmas Seasons -- and for the first time in over a Quarter of a Century -- I was able to purchase something for the "forgotten one" - ME! And yes, it was my first new TV in over a quarter of a century -- and I know I am going to enjoy it (especially since my current TV is not much longer going to work -- the picture is already messed up, the sounds are going, and it is going into the trash as soon as I can get some help getting it out of the home!)

I hate to be crass, but if there's anyone out there who wants to give me a gift, I need plenty of practical things, like clothes, luggage, bedding and towels, and do not need cute little nick knacks. The only reason I bother to answer is that I know many of you are buying for old ladies who live alone, and I beg you to take the time to find out what she wants instead of buying her some luxury item that may or may not mean a thing to her.
Nightgowns, slippers and robes are good because you don't have to worry about duplicates. Just means one to wear while another is being washed. Any clothes like sweaters or tee shirts where you can be sure you know her style and not just her size.
Better still, give her gift cards from her favorite stores, and let her take some of the weight off her budget for the necessities before indulging in luxuries. Buy me a card for a bookstore if you love me.
I did say necessities. Books (and maybe DVDs) are necessities.

I have a friend who doesn't want anything 'for the house' as a gift. I'm not in agreement with her ~ I would love a vacuum cleaner (a Dyson would be awesome, but I'll probably end up with a Hoover or something a little less expensive. . .); a water softener; new pots and pans; etc. Practical presents never hurt my feelings, but I suppose I'd like a purse, some lotion, and some candles, too!

I'm crippled and need a nice, cushy, lift recliner so I can get in and out easily and take a break from a hard wheelchair , but they are SO expensive and the insurence wont pay for them.

I'd like my kids to make something heartfelt. Something they put thought, love and time into. Something I could hold on to for the rest of my life as a memory of how much they love me. I'm such a sap....
