Because society has conditioned people to believe that golden is better, thin is in...etc, etc....Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that the way it should stay. Look, do, say, wear, eat, drink whatever makes you feel better about yourself. screw what Hollywood and anyone else says.

The reasoning goes like this;
People who are suntanned can lie around on beaches.
You need a lot of time to lie around on beaches.
People who have a lot of time therefore obviously don't have many worries.
People without many worries probably have lots of money.
Anyone with money is a magnet to materialistic people.
Simple as that, really. Only shallow and materialistic people find suntanned skin attractive.

you have to ask yourself that question, as they appear to look good to you. Sociologically, having tanned skin is a sign of wealth as it shows that you have the money to go to exotic locations (it used to be that being extra pale was a sign of wealth as it meant you could afford to not labor in the sun).
but tanned skin isn't attractive to everyone, trust me.

I hate the sun-tanned look. I have very fair skin and one of my friends in high school's mom is a dermatologist and she said that she loved how my skin was so healthy!

I don't fully agree with that. I think that pale skin is much prettier, offers a better overall complexion and ages better. If you have naturally darker skin, that's fine...but fake n' bake tan is not attractive.
Your question is stated in a very bias and unfair fashion.

that's not necessarily true, I've seen many natural, olive, no tan skin people that have looked a lot more attractive than all these artificial tanned people.

I can't imagine anyone who subjects their skin to carcinogens looking attractive. Excessive and long-term exposure to the sun causes your skin to turn leathery, and to wrinkle and age prematurely. It also greatly increases your risk of cancer. What could possibly be attractive about that?

Yeah, right. Attractive now, that's just your preference. Ten years from now, they look like an unmade bed.
