It came into being formally on May 07 1707 (ie from that date as a political entity & for a further 290 years) & it certainly WASN'T welcomed by the people, which might explain the riots through the country when the Act of Union was formally passed. Ordinary people couldn't vote back then. If they could then you can be damn sure Scotland & England would still be too seperate countries. As you say it all had to do with the bribes etc the Scots "High Heid Yins" had taken, but there were other factors as well, such as the failed "Darien Expedition" which left Scotland virtually bankrupt at the end of the 17th Century.

1603 - Union of the Crowns - King James VI of Scotland becomes James I of Britain

1707 - Parlimentrary act of union - the Scottish Parliment decided to vote itself out of existence. It only represented the elities of Scotland, so therefore the Scottish People did not vote for it.

p.s I agree with Paul and I'm Scottish! No I am not a nationalist, in fact I wish the Parliment in Edinburgh was never allowed to exist a waste of money and a waste of time!

The Act of Union was ratified January 16, 1707. It was ratified by the Scottish house of Parliament and the English house of Parliament.

Under the Act of Union the two Parliaments would be dissolved into one Parliament of Great Britain. There was no vote of the people only the vote of their representatives in Parliament.

The two countries had already been united for about 100 years under the rule of King James I. He was the rightful heir to the English throne and the son of Mary Queen of Scots. Under his rule he united Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England into one nation.

Like with the question about Wales. If Scotland wants to split from England then all the Scottish MP's should be kicked out of the House of Commons.
