Well, some do, anyway. There are people who, having rejected Christianity themselves, feel the same proselytizing attitude they had when they thought they were Christians (or their parents thought they were, anyway). Now they are preaching a different line, but they are still preaching. So when you say Merry Christmas, they need to make a point that they are not Christians.

They become not simply non-Christian but anti-Christians.

But it's almost always former Christians who are like that. And usually only for a year or two, until they learn better manners. Try not to let it get you down. But don't argue with them; it's not worth your time.

I've never personally met a person who got bent out of shape over hearing "Merry Christmas". I think very people people would get upset over such a thing. In fact, I think most Americans are begining to think that political correctness has gone too far.

People that are ultra liberal believe you will insult any non christian that hears you say it. Then you have the ultra conservative that get pist because you say "happy holidays" instead of Merry Christmas. I think I am with most people that just get tired of hearing the argument.

For the same reason people don't like to hear "God Bless". It's offensive to some to assume they believe in these trivial things. Try "Happy Holidays". It's much more general and can be applied to everyone.
