Basically A Coma is you basic equivalent of your computer's SAFE mode, all the basic things are running, like breathing, blood pumping and the digestive system works. (dependant on circumstances). usually a coma is the result of a trauma to the brain, and the brain off-lines the higher functions while it attempts to re-wire itself and bypass the damaged areas,

it has been known for someone to remain in a coma state for years and then suddenly wake up, once services have been restores sufficiently. what is more examinations to the awoken patient (like MRI) can show areas of extensive reconstruction in the brain, and areas which before had been devoted to one function acting as a backup system for areas of the brain which may have become damaged.

A coma state can also be chemically induced, this state is useful to healthcare as some treatments for various conditions can be extreemly painful/traumatic to a consious person(possibly even causing a heart attack or permenant psychological damage)

Yes, there was a person in a coma for 10 years! They came around but they may as well have been dead - they couldn't do anything for themselves - they were mentally and physically impaired!!

Yes they can but it's extremely unlikely. I understand it is also necessary for them to have some brain activity showing on scans although they would be described as being in a persistant vegatative state and the likliehood is if they woke up they would be extremely badly brain damaged
