The most important thing they did was a hire a Pete Carroll trained coach. The defensive coordinator who is a traitor was trained by Pete.
The other thing is that Dorrell has all the job security in the world if he beats USC so he has all of his season focused on the one game. Ucla fans could care less if they are 500 but if they win against USC they act as if they just won the super bowl. Ucla football's only exists to try to be a thorn in the side of USC. Sometime they succeed. They get the whole mentality in the ucla program so come the USC game the ucla players are going to their biggest game in their life. The ucla players for whatever reason were not recruited by USC so they are angry. It can provide great motivation.
Overall the key to the game was the great play by UCLA's dline. They constantly beat the USC offensive line. The also took advantage of true freshmen RB in Gable who didn't play good.
Injuries hurt USC alot as well. The 1st and 2nd string back were not healthy. Washington was not 100% and Moody was out. All three fullbacks were lost for the season.
Also Booty didn't play great. He had a chance on the last drive and threw a bad pass. He seemed off.
The USC team was kind of flat coming off ND game. Maybe they thought they would just walk through ucla like the 7 previous years. Maybe the were too arrogant.

it has to be a combination of the following:
1. USC probably overlooked ucla and focused on ohio state
2. ucla had two weeks to prepare for the game
3. ucla's new defensive coordinator understood USC's offense
4. ucla's defensive line played the best game of their lives
5. john david booty did not have the leadership capability to win it
6. USC's o-line committed ridiculous penalties
all in all, ucla outplayed and outcoached USC.
but why are the ucla fans such pricks? okay, you won a game. but it wasn't even a blow-out...so what? ucla will be in the non-bcs emerald bowl, while USC still gets to play in the rose bowl.
most ucla fans suck and have no class. that's what i've noticed on this yahoo answers thing.

Pete Carroll was bought. The point spread was like 13 points, and everybody & there Momma thought USC was going to blow FUCLA out, except Carroll, and the Bookies. Did U see that One play on 4th & 5, Carroll called a HB sweep??..U freakin' kiddin' me?..John Booty also played like a $2 whore..USC tanked that game, they wanted to stay in Pasadena(Rose Bowl). and make Pete rich...

They outplayed the bunch of whining trojans, including coach pete carroll, who showed how unsportsmanlike he was when he refused to walk out to midfield to shake the UCLA coach's hand. The UCLA coach had to walk across the field to usc's sideline to shake hands. Get over it trojans, you aren't God's gift to college football!

Easy: 'SC never got into a rhythm and FUCLA's defensive schemes were too much for 'SC to handle and make adjustments for. They played a better game and we may have been looking ahead to Ohio State.
