Traditionally, a shoe is left outside of the door of the house (or child's room) and if found the next morning with a small "treat" inside, usually a piece of candy or fruit. This is what we do at our house, even though our kids are grown, they will receive a piece of candy tomorrow, and I will remind them to put their shoes out. We will also have a "mysterious basket" that will be left next to the fireplace filled with more sweet goodies.

You put a sock out (hence the christmas stocking) and fill it with goodies if the child was good or with coal if the child has been bad. It gives them an idea of what is ahead for christmas. If they get coal (which I highly do not suggest) then they know they have to be good so Santa Claus will bring better things at christmas. (St. Nick really is Santa I think)
St. Nick is December 6th, tomorrow...not sure if He comes tongiht so the kids have the gifts on the 6th or if he comes on the 6th and kids get the gifts the 7th....
