It shouldnt hurt. It's not the best feeling in the world..but more uncomfortable then anything. Don't worry...besides..you will have to get used to it. You are gonna have a gyno staring at your stuff at least once a year for the rest of your life. It's fast....less than a minute. DON'T WORRY. Find a woman if it makes you feel more comfortable. But after a while you will probbaly be fine with a male doctor. It's their job, they know what they are doing. A pap smear can pinch a little and exams hurt me because of a condition I have, but when I was younger they did not.

The speculum (the device used to open the vaginal canal) comes in different sizes....and for sanitary reasons, most are plastic one-time use items as well, so they're not as cold as the old metal ones. Be SURE to tell your doc you're a virgin - they'll use a smaller speculum and not open it quite so far. FYI - your vagina is a very flexible organ, so not to worry there. However, if your hymen is really tight, there may be some tearing, so you might want to discuss this with your doc...not to worry - you'll still be considered a virgin.
As for the discomfort, it can be uncomfortable, but it's more of a pressure feeling. Make absolutely SURE to urinate and have a bowel movement before the exam - it'll make it less uncomfortable. There will be a little pinching sensation and maybe some spotting when they do the PAP smear, but this should be fast and minimal. Just be sure to be as relaxed as possible and try not to concentrate on the whole thing. Also, don't be afraid to ask what's going on...the doc will be happy to tell you exactly what he/she is doing...and most will tell you step by step anyway.
Finally, while you're there, talk to your doc about getting the new HPV vaccine. It is make to prevent infection by HPV - the leading cause of cervical cancer and one of the most rampantly spread STD's in the world today. Since you're still a virgin, you're an ideal candidate, since you've no chance of having been exposed yet.

I was not a virgin when I had my first exam, but it wasn't that bad. The Dr. I had warmed the tools first and then put plenty of lube on them. The pap smear felt a little gross, because she was scratching at my cervix with a brush....yet it didn't really hurt.
Just relax and things will go smoothly.

Not as long as your doctor is gentle. You will not be spread a lot. Do not worry about your hymen. It goes very quickly and you will be fine.

I never had one when I was a virgin but my step-daughter had a little pain when she had one and she was a virgin when she had her exam. Everyone is different though. My step-daughter has a very low pain threshold.

No Dear. They Don't spread you a lot and they DO NOT break your hymen. THAT particular item is sacred!!!
A doctor will do his best NOT to hurt you but let me warn you, from what I understand.........those instruments are ICE COLD!!! :-) Its hard but just relax and let him/her do their job. IF it hurts, TELL the doctor. Good luck, Sweetheart. Pops
