I would stay at a hotel in Downtown SD. Since you only have a week total, you'll only have a few days in SD, so staying in Downtown or the Gaslamp District will give you plenty to do. There are lots of restaurants and bars and a great shopping mall, plus the Embarcadero and the Maritime Museum and the Midway aircraft carrier which you can visit. You can also take the trolley to Old Town. If you can afford to rent a car in SD, I would because SD isn't a complact town like San Fran...a lot of things worth seeing are not within easy walking distance and our public tranport is not very good or efficient. If you do get a car for a day or two make sure to see Balboa Park, La Jolla, and Coronado (specicialally the Hotel del Coronado). I would not take the bus or train to San Fran, I would fly up there. Your time is too short to spend a whole day traveling. I don't think that a one way ticket up there would cost you that much more than a bus ticket especially considering the time you save. The flight is only about an hour or something like that (but you need to find transportation into town). In San Fran I would be sure to visit Chinatown, Alcatraz and ride a cable car. If you do want to go to Alcatraz, make sure you make reservations in advance! Most of what you really want to see can be done on foot...but it's a very hilly city, so I hope you have good walking shoes. We have stayed at Vagabond Inn (or whatever it is called now) at , 2550 Van Ness Ave
San Francisco, CA 94109 Ph (415) 776-7500 Fax: (415) 776-5689 . My family stayed there in the 70's and again in the 80's and I hope to go back soon.

There's so much to do in San Diego....cultural, sporting events, recreations, dining. Check out this site for specific ideas: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com.
I would stay on the beach or with a view of the beach if you can afford it. You could probably get some good rates this time of year. There's a list of all the hotels located right on the beach at the site above....also lots of other things to do: kayaking, sunsets, Balboa Park, hiking, wine tasting, etc.
In San Francisco....ride the ferry to Sausilito, ride bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge if its nice, make reservations now for Alcatraz. Be sure to watch all the Alcatraz movies before you visit. Go wine tasting in Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore. All are just a day trip from San Francisco....with Livermore being the least crowded and most tasting is free. Make reservations to see the live show "Beach Blanket Babylon"....it's a San Francisco tradition.
Have fun!

i love both!!! Im 28 and stay in Scotland, uk and for the previous 4 years my boyfriend and that i have spent our 3 week vacation staying in San Francisco and pushed right down to San Diego. the line vacation is brilliant, and that i continuously discover lots to do in both cities. that is actual San Diego is hotter, yet both have large climate (somewhat compared to the unpredictable Scottish summers) identity say the San Francisco sights must be performed persistently 365 days after 365 days, even as i does not opt for to bypass to the likes of sea international more advantageous then once. both have astonishing eating places and bars and both are supper pleasant. My in elementary words predicament is understanding which Baseball crew to help even as im there. i love, love, love them both!! yet at 17 you should probably do more advantageous suited in San Diego, i think, as eating is out of the question.
