Sadly an aweful lot of wars historically have partly or wholy been due to religion - the Crusades, the six days war, the whole Northern Ireland issue, the civil war and genocide in Sudan (current), the civil war between Sunni and Shia muslims in Iraq (current).

They are just innumerable.
During the thirty years war from 1618 to 1648 middle Europe was nearly totally ruined and devasted. Almost two third of the people in these regions died during that war.

I think it is easy to blame religion. But with further inspection there are three stronger factors: Land, Gold, and Power.
But these are much easier to obtain if you do it in a God's name.
