The Union Flag is a reference back to the original US flag which was based upon the British American Colonial flag. This original flag had a Union Jack in the upper left hand corner with thirteen red and white stripes. In 1776 the Union Jack was removed and replaced with a circle of 13 white stars on a blue background. This new flag was called the Union Flag.
Problem with the term Union Flag is that it also applies to the UK flag which is officially called The Union Flag, representing the union of Scotland with England.
The name Stars and Stripes is probably more to do with a march by the late Mr Sousa. People have just mixed it up somehow.

No, there should be a union jack to the left - Italy has also lost its flag :-(
The two bottom rows have both lost the left most flag.
(This is those little flags under the questions)

The Cross of St.Patrick is still a part of the "Great Union Flag" because of " Ulster" and if I'm not mistaken, isn't St. Patrick suppossedly buried in Derry?

For those who've never been to the bottom of a page here, the questioner is referring to the dogs dinner that yahoo have made of the languages lines. Hardly a single flag is in the right place and some of them are literally "waving in the breeze" - not being attached to ANY country ! ! !
Still, of course, this IS yahoo..........
