When I have a firm interest in convincing someone that I am not in denial--it is more often because I am. Otherwise, my own truth would suffice and I would not desire to engage in such a battle.

Yes it can be. If someone has made up their minds about you and those things aren't so then I wouldn't have anything to do with them. They must not know the real you.
