If a girl under 16 is old enough to decide to have an abortion, shouldn't she be old enough to consent to sex?
If society does not believe she is mature enough to consent to sex, then how can she be mature enough to decide about an abortion?
What is your opinion?
Please, no cases about child rape, incest, etc as that is not the question. This is not asking/judging whether or not an abortion is a good idea. This question is asking whether it makes sense to make the age a girl can choose an abortion the same as the age where a girl can choose to create the reason for the abortion.

Shelly----yes, a girl can physically have an abortion as soon as she is pregnant. But the question is: if a girl who is 15 is not old enough to legally consent to sex with a 16 year old boy, how can she be old enough to choose an abortion?
Blakenwite---great point. Abortion stands out as something a otherwise underage kid can do on her own. Working, quitting school and drinking (as ARTICCHICK pointed out) are also "age related" things that should get dropped if society truly believes a 14 yr old girl is mature.
Articchick---Yes, you can't take your niece for stitches or to get her ears pierced, but you could take her to get an abortion.

Why not lower the drinking age while we're at it?
Young girls are usually preyed upon by older boys/men. Not always, but usually. Sex is extremely emotional for a woman, especially a young woman. No, I don't think the age of consent should be lowered to 11 or 12.
I also don't think that a 12 or 13 year old girl is old enough to deal with the emotional ramifications of abortion on her own. Certainly, a system needs to be in place to protect abused kids, but no, I don't think a young girl should be allowed to have an abortion without her parents consent. If my niece gets hurt at my house, I can not legally take her in to get stitches - so why on earth should I be allowed to take her in for an abortion?

Should we lower the age of consent to the age when a girl is able to have a baby? Should we lower the age of consent to the age when a boy is able to get a girl pregnant? Should we lower the age of consent to the age when puberty occurs? Many countries do. If we lower the age to that...(11 or 12) we should also make it a rule that when a child reaches puberty they are legal to work a full time job and quit school if they want to.
Its something to think about. Just because a person if physically mature, doesn't necessarily mean they are mentally mature but then maybe they would become mentally mature if they were given heavy...very heavy responsibilities and duties as an adult.
If we did that, I bet we would cut down on teen age crime and boredom. I think maybe I agree with you but not on the condition of abortion but on the condition of puberty. Maybe the age of consent should be 12 years old...a lot to consider there.

Under the age of 18 a girl cannot understand the difference between sex and love.

Personally I don't think it makes sense. Her parents are responsible for her in every other way. She is not old enough to vote or to enter into a legal contract. If she is not considered mature enough to be able to make those types of decisions, she certainly has no business having sex, making babies and then making the decision about whether or not the child lives or dies.
