It was the idea that it was America's "destiny" to populate the western frontier. That it was God's decree that Americans do so, and push out the native "savages" living in the western territories. America had believed at that time that the North American continent was given to them as a gift from God.

This can be very relatable to our foreign policy since the end of World War II. Check out the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations.

PieOPie is right about what manifest destiny is--others are right in that the concept that the U.S. had a God-given right to the territory west of the original colonies all the way to the Pacific did indeed help lead to conflict with Mexico, which owned and had "settled" much of the American West long before the U.S. got there.

Others might think that the manifest destiny concept is broader, and includes the idea that the U.S. is a God-based nation that should not be shy about "civilizing" and taking over other godless countries. This broader concept is part of the basis for American Imperialism, which I am defining narrowly to cover such foreign policies as the Spanish American war (1897), American expansion and occupation in the Pacific, and the sometimes brutal U.S. occupation of the Phillipines in the early 20th century.

It relates to American foreign policy in that the US is going to be very aggressive concerning territorial expansion. Manifest Destiny was one of the reasons why Americans very nearly went to war with Britain over the possession of Oregon and why we DID go to war with Mexico over California.

Finally! people are opening their eyes to see the truth and the facts displayed here speak for themselves. After that great answer from gypsy_cat 345, i haven't got much to say except that people like Vanessa should look at the bigger picture and make her own assessments, rather than believing in what the media WANT people to believe. also, i don't think people should balme the Islamic RELIGION for the actions of ignorant so-called Muslims who claim they are acting on its behalf. secondly, i don't think Israel is JUST a small country that wants to be left alone. If this was the case it would not have waged a full-blown war on lebanon, killing thousands of people in order to regain 2 of their soldiers who were captured by Hezbollah. Shouldn't they think about releasing the 1000s of lebanese prisoners currently in Israel! Thirdly, Muslims do not have anything against Jews. The issue is with the Zionists and Israelis. BTW, I am NOT Lebanese. I'm simply stating what i beleive is the truth

With Americans moving west they had to deal with Native Americans and Mexicans... Those are the two groups that you need to relate Manifest Destiny to.

Manifest destiny just means that you BELIEVE it's meant to be. It's an excuse to take over other people's property. Applying it to foreign policy, it's an excuse to force other countries to do what we want them to do.
