If he's going for acoustic, go with Ovation or Gibson

Electric; Ibanez, Fender, Gibson, or Schecter.

Well, you need to decide whether you want to get him an Acoustic guitar or an Electric guitar. Acoustic guitars are the wooden ones with the hole in the middle. An electric guitar requires an amp to produce the sound. Once you've decided which is the kind he wants, you'll have to come up with a budget. If you're willing to spend around $500 or more, go with a Martin acoustic. If you want to spend more like $100-$300, try Fender or Gibson. If you're looking for a cheapie, Wal-Mart sells First Act guitars---both acoustic and electric. If it's an electric guitar you need, I like Fender Stratocasters. They can vary in price tremendously, however. A cheaper Fender electric guitar is the Squier. Good Luck!

I, myself play the guitar, and absolutely rock! If he plays the electric Guitar, You may want to spoil the surprise, and get a gift certificate from a music dealer. You can also bring him, and tell him you want to go in the music store for something, and ask him if he wants to test drive a guitar or two. That will clue you in to what hes into. You could also buy him the one he prefers, then and there.
The reason for this approach is that there are so many options. Fender Strats, or Telecasters. Gibson is also a solid rock guitar. Lots of models to choose from when it comes to these guitar manufacturers. Many other guitars also rock. The true guitarist will find one that he, or she just ....well, is them. Hes gotta play a couple, because no two guitars are the same. I could go on, and on, but I hope you got something from this.

Im a musician myself working with producers and everything. I would say to go with a nice electric guitar depending on the kind fo rock he does. If its more screamind and stuff def. go with an electric and stay to the cheaper side to make sure thatl work. Fender is really good, then once he gets to know guitar more id say go with a more exspensive guitar like a gibson. If he sings rock but more like creed id personally go with an acoustic, but one that can be plugged into and amp for more rocking out. and you can get a guitar like that at any guitar store for a decent price

Either ask him what kind he wants (best idea!) OR get him a gift certificate from a music store that sells good guitars.
Some good guitars for rock are Fender or Gibson. He may want an acoustic or an electric.

well some of the best guitars are fender but they could go anywhere from 250 to 22000 dollars. if hes really into it and is pretty good id say get him one of the less expensive fenders. les pauls are very good too but they could also get expensive. now if hes just starting guitar id say go for one of the starter packs that have a guitar, amp, and all the other things that he would need. thats what i got to start and now im playing an very excellent fender.

Since he's offshore, I assume you want an acoustic vs. an electric. Depends on what you want to spend. For $500-ish, you can get a Martin, a VERY nice acoustic with good resale in case he ever changes his mind.

For electric, try a Fender... Hard to go wrong with a Strat.

Cheap guitars are cheaply made. Good for kids who are learning, but not fit for serious music. Good luck!

get him the combined guitar, a classical and electric combined.

if u wanna use the electric, just plug in the cable.
if u wanna play the normal guitar, just unplugged the cable.

kinda versatile....
