Marriage. It's easy to walk from a "roommate" situation, but much more difficult to walk from a marriage.
And if children are born of the relationship, that gives them a sense of family they won't have otherwise.

It depends on the people of course, but a marriage is a more formal committment, so some women feel more comfortable with that. Especially if children are born of the relationship- marriage can help make it easier for financial support and other issues if the relationship fails.

I think you should definately test drive a car befor you buy it.
Do you walk through the house before you buy it?
Large commitments require more insight. Why find out after a year that the guy who was so perfect is a slob and plays playstation until 3 am every night?
