Changing Filters
Filters should be replaced monthly, or if reusable filters are
installed, they should be cleaned monthly.
1. Unscrew the filter box access door fastener (see
Figure 1). Set aside for future use.
2. Remove access door.
3. Slide the right side filter out and then the left side filter.
Discard both filters.
4. Insert new filter on the left side first. Ensure the back
edge of the filter is underneath the back bracket. (See
Figure 1.)
5. After inserting left filter into box, rest the filter bottom
upon the support tab on the center rail. This will hold
the left filter in place while inserting the right filter.
6. Insert new filter on the right side next. Ensure the back
edge of the filter is underneath the back bracket. (See
Figure 1.)
7. Replace access door. The left side of the door should
hinge with left side of box, and then the right side
should be secured with fastener removed in step 1.
(See Figure 1.)

Some filters are bidirectional meaning that it does not matter which way the air travels. If, after you look around the edge of the filter and do not find an arrow which indicates the proper flow, there are a few additional things to look for.
First, if there is a plastic or metal mesh grate or lining on one side, then you would typically orient the filter such that this mesh side is closest to the furnace. That is, the air travels through the other side and then through the mesh. The mesh side reinforces the media in the filter holding its shape.
If both sides look the same, you might remember back to when you were cleaning it. Typically there will be more surface dust and dirt on the side facing away from the furnace.
Lastly, if none of the above has helped, orient the darker side facing away from the furnace. Some of the more advanced filters have charcoal or psuedo-charcoal pre-filters (which are darker than the rest of the media). This side is intended to face the air first.
This last tip also applies in cases where there is not a charcoal pre-filter, yet the filter has seen prolonged usage and is just naturually darker now (from use) on the side facing away from the furnace.
Good luck.
