I have been working for 3 months and started 1st year university. I attended my last lecture of the semester yesterday and exams start on Friday, Dec. 8. However, my employer (a large retail department store) wants me to work many hours over the next two weeks, which will not leave me much time to study for my upcoming exams.

My next shifts are: Wednesday night & Saturday night. I thought it would be reasonable to drop a resignation letter either today or tomorrow before my shift on wendesday, then attend the shift on wednesday and indicate in my letter my services will not be available for the Saturday night shift and for the future.

Is 4 days notice enough? I am still in the probationary 90 days in which i can be fired whenever they like. I do not have a copy of my employment contract, but i don't think there is any legal matter involved.

Please give me your opinion: is dropping a letter of resignation to my manager and giving them 4 days notice sufficient to leave my job?

Most part time employment is at will. In other words, you can be terminated at any time for any reason. Have you given thought to speaking with your employer and letting them know that you cannot work more than a certain number of hours per week because of your school schedule? I think most employers will understand. If not, you can always put in a notice. It is usually customary to give 1-2 weeks notice.

You aren't required to give 2 weeks it is only a courtesy so they can find a replacement, 4 days is better than nothing and probably more than they usually get. There is a high turnover rate in retail and right now they are probably full of extra seasonal workers. The other option would be finding someone to work you saturday shift for you.

I doubt it. some places you should artwork is a minimum of 35hrs (or maybe with finished time that is there) previously you could also get coverage/advantages. even though it by no skill hurts to ask. some section-time jobs you're fortunate in the journey that they help you come back decrease back after taking a go away from having a toddler. only relies upon at the position you artwork.

Normally 2 weeks is the standard, but since its only a part time job AND you have exams coming up which are way more important and they won't give you the time off, then i say four days is fine.

Good Luck on your exams
