Plant cells do respire all the time, but they HAVE to respire in the dark.

They only have a strong photosintezis under the light of sun. There is a continuo exchange of gasses and vapor transpiration at any plant except for the winter season. In the dry are plants adapted and do not have a very high exchange of gasses and transpiration is reduced. If the transpiration process is stopped for a reason the plant will die. You can see transpiration by covering a plant whit a plastic bag. You will see drop of water even if is day or night.

During the day = photosynthesis
During night = Calvin Cycle (traditional cellular respiration).
Yes plants do use oxygen if they don't have a choice.

The light I think. They have to have light for photosenthesis so I would think they would do it in the light.
