NBA no longer counts the dribble step. This seemed to be intended to let these big guys gather before taking two steps. It has devolved into "dribble" step (in any direction, long or short)
, one step(your defender jumps because he played his whole life with this being the second step) and two (actually third step) and suddenly a pip squeak has blown by a seven foot shot blocker that was waiting for him the whole time. It's ridiculous now!

Two, after dribbling the basketball. You can't take any steps then dribble, you have to dribble first, and be in the process of attempting a shot.

The rule book says one step if you're passing and two steps if you're shooting. More than that is supposed to be travelling. That's not how it works in practice. I once saw Scottie Pippen take six BIG steps going in for a dunk. He started about the top of the key. That's not unusual. Most lay-ups or dunks can be taken away for travelling.
