It's because of society I think. It makes us believe to be successful in life every woman needs to be a size 2 and every man needs to have a six pack. When in reality, the way you look has nothing to do with what you will accomplish in life. Unfortunately, a lot of people have gotten brainwashed and they put other people down, which makes people feel bad about themselves and it results in them changing themselves and their outer image to be accepted in society. That's what I think.

not people, AMERICANS, we all think we need to uphold a certain image to be liked and that's a bunch of s h i t , it's our society and what it has inflicted upon us, you need to embrace who you are there is a reason we are all different, what a boring place it would be if we we all the same. So those people who are afraid to be themselves they fit the perfect example of how ignorant our society has made us.

I don't think it's a new phenomenon. People are social animals who crave acceptance and fear rejection. It has always been that way. Even so-called counter-culture folks (e.g. goth) are looking for acceptance - they just look for it in a sub-cultures instead of the culture as a whole.
