Thanks for this question! It's a good one, and let me check that my own understanding was accurate.
They are a people indigenous to Kurdistan, a region (not a country) that lay in northern Iraq and parts of Syria and other countries. They have their own culture, history/heritage, and language (Kurdish). As such, they are very different from the rest of the Iraqis.
