more than likely the fact that you are here typing on your computer and what nots.. is one reason he stays rich..
He invented microsoft windows where it took computer programing out of the dark ages.. To do anything before, you had to be your own programmer, you had to type out each and every command to the computer. Windows sort of took those commands and hid them behind a button, So now we just click here, click there and its all done for us.. THanks to Mr. Bill Gates...

he is "richest" because he has more net worth than anyone else. it's not about popularity.

I.e. the whole mouse idea (which he stole from Xerox) and the Windows operating system (which is based on the graphic user interface).
