During the show's opening credits, Maggie goes through a supermarket checkout scanner, which reads that she is worth $847.63 (a wry reference to the monthly cost of infant-rearing in 1989). In "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular", the scanner instead reads "NRA4EVER."
What I've always wondered is - does Marge actually pay the money?

I don't know if it usually says it however I did record an episode once to read the register and that time it said "847.63". And I've heard that on an anniversary episode it read "NRA4EVR".

I think it is different every time. It is supposed to be the amount of what it takes to raise a child per year.
