The EU is basically a rejoining of the old Roman Empire. The member countries of the EU are similar to the American States. It is a way for members to have a single currency and political system rather than each country having different money and separate political systems. The EU expects to rival the U.S. in economic and political power in this century.

Also, in an attempt for Europe to to be more of a superpower since China is well on their way.
