They sell little gizmos meant just for that purpose, to measure microwave leakage, at some hardware stores. If the oven is fairly new, has no breakage or cracks, and the door seal is intact, it is considered safe. If it is old, I'd pitch it based on safety, as the old ones had less strict guidelines and they are more prone to leak. You can pick up a good microwave so cheaply now, if you're that worried about it, get a new one. If in doubt, chuck it out.

A microwave tester is the only way you'll know if there is any radiation leaking. They aren't that expensive (certainly cheaper than a new microwave).

For your own safety, you shouldn't be standing anywhere within 4 ft of the microwave when it's on.
