i was curious as to whether premature infants can switch to regular milk at (chronological) age one like regular babies or do they have to wait until they were "supposed" to make one?(had they made it to term)

for example...twins born at 29 weeks gestation...due on valentines day but born on dec 3...can they switch from formula to cows milk on their birthday?

It depends on the baby. Some infants make up for lost time pretty rapidly, and can start to follow more standard time points at around a year.

Others dont.

Being that these twins were sooo early, i'd say keep them on formula longer.

I would ask your pediatrician, but if their growth is healthy I don't see why you would need to wait to offer regular cow's milk. I would switch it gradually when he turns 1 year. Put 3 parts formula and 1 part milk in sippy cup for a day. Then 50:50 on day 2. Day 3, 3 parts milk and 1 part formula. Day 4, 100% whole milk. Just make sure you keep him on whole milk until 2 years old. He needs the extra fat and cholesterol for his brain development.

It really depends on the child. If they are eating enough food then it would probably ba fine to switch them at 1 yr, but formula has so many more nutrients so if they don't eat good I would say keep them on formula. Also if they have a hard time gaining weight they should stay on formula longer. Wic switches babies to whole milka t age one no matter what their gestational age is, unless the doctor orders them to stay on formula. My daughter is almost 13 months old and still on formula. She is G-tube fed.

I would think they can! I would think the only thing that makes a preemie different from a full term baby is when they reach their milestones and accomplish things like rolling over, crawling, walking, etc... I would just go with the flow and give them milk at 12 months, if for some reason their little tummies cannot handle it or something..Go talk to your doctor and you may have to prolong it. Good luck!

a premee can get sick on any thing, i would ask your baby doctor, or madebe soy or rice milk but cow milk has chemical added, what was in the formula? you better get a professional help on that one.
