i dont think american women are particularly fickle, nor do i see a conflict between having material things and also caring about the world and deeper things,,,,, the women are no more into the material things of life then the men are,,, so its more of a cultural thing, not a gender thing

We follow fashion trends because we always have to look great in order to be treated with any respect from others. Of course we care about philosophy and world hunger and the environment and politics, but we have learned by now that first and foremost we are judged by our appearance rather than our actions or beliefs. If we're going to get anything done, we first have to get people to pay attention and listen to us, and the only way for American men to pay any attention to women is to look good and hope that they aren't tuning us out completely. Clothes and jewelry also help distract us from bad things in our lives...kind of like how beer and watching sports do for men.

That's not what "fickle" means. Fickle means unstable, inconstant, changes one's mind easily. The word you want is materialistic. (Sorry, I know you're probably going to get mad that I called you out like that, but I just thought you should know.) Anyway, to answer your question, I don't think all American women care only about material things. Honestly, when I get together with my friends, we talk about political issues, science articles we've read, philosophy...okay, so we're a bunch of nerds. And yes, some women seem entirely shallow and materialistic, but so do plenty of men. It seems that all that a lot of them talk about are cars, sports, and women. There are those kind of people of all types and varieties.

I love clothes and I love jewelry. I like to look classy and girly. I work hard and if I can afford designer things, great!! I care about about how I look - A LOT. Other things matter, but the only way I can help is to make donations and try to help that way. I'm not Angelina Jolie, I can't go make a big show, while really accomplishing nothing but my own agenda - accumulating children.

This is one of the "broad generalization" questions that makes me crazy. Of course, some women are fickle and materialistic. There are, however, an equal amount and probably more who are NOT fickle, couldn't care less about designer labels, and value the important things in life. For the young 20-somethings (I am not one of them) they get attention and are noticed by the way they dress and act. Older women are more secure in themselves and most don't need the act and dress. They rely on their internal strengths for security and acceptance.

Well there are women out there like that. And part of it is what gets a response. Men give a second look to girls with butt and boobs not brains. Most men do not want to get to know someone that is what they call beautiful. There are women out there that are interested in philosophy and politic who are generous and down to earth. But they enjoy cafes and bookstores not necessarily parties and bar (not that they don't go there just that is not where they are most likely to be). Look I don't entirely blame men. Women choose sometimes to be objectified.

Since the suffragette era, American women have lost sight of what is important. Public School and depending on a husbands paycheck helps lose a world view too.

They are better educated and better informed. This is a good thing and makes the man she chooses even more special.
