Grandma is old and jaded. She is from a time of ignorance and is set in her ways. Don't take this as an insult, my Grandparents are ignorant about some things too.
Best to let her have her opinions, and perhaps let her know that you have different ones. Then don't harp on hers, and she's not to harp on yours.

grandma may have been around longer than you, and she is entitled to her opinions, but sadly her opinions are based on ignorance. Judging from her statement she doesnt know the first thing about Africa or Africa's history. To say that "Africa is poor" is overgeneralizing a continent with 30 countries, about 100 known langauges and dialects, and the richest natural resources of diamonds, gold, and oil. Unfortunatley, the images that we see of violence and suffering are real. The reasons for the problems in Africa are not just the fault of African peoples today, but there are also the historical implications involving european countries (and America) who colonized, and exploited Africans in every way possible.
Your grandma is older and it is very hard to change the minds of old people. The best thing you can do is show her research on Africa and African people that shows the good and the bad. If she chooses to accept what you are showing her then great, but if she doesnt then theres not much more you can do.

Grandma is wrong, Africa is poor because we are responsible for that, while it's our duty to help in developing the African nations.
What are we doing instead? I mean what the developed or "civilized" countries are doing?
Stealing the African treasures and supporting dectatorial regimes.
Shame on everybody, AIDS is harvesting the innocent souls while our medical companies are offering medicine with highest costs.
I advice you to look for an article called: who murdered africa? type it in google search engine and you will notice the complete answer.
May GOD save Africa and help those who are in need.

Africa is poor because countries like ours and others have gone there and taken any and everything of value including people at one time, like appox. 200 years ago and the USA is not the greatest nation on earth they can't even help their own people when a natural disaster strikes, so how great are you when you can't even take care of your own.

With due respect to grandma, that is not true. Please request her to read the history and get from the history. Record it some where for future reference that if American continued the way they are trying and moving for forward like (invading other countries without any reason, legalizing gay marriages (AIDS), staging b/f, g/f, dating dramas etc.) and ignoring all moral, ethical and decent human attributes, they will be soon worse than Africans.

Gramdma grew up with no diversity at school, and narrow minded polititians and media who spoon fed this mentality to people back then.
I tell you, life would get a little better once all baby boomers are gone and generations that follow who were used to diverse contact with people that have a better sense of all this.

Help how? Most older people are set in their ways, just don't bring up this topic when you are around her. If she brings it up excuse yourself and leave the room. Just because she believes it does not make it right nor does it mean that you must agree with her.

Grandma doesn't sound very nice. Has she ever been sick? Did she "deserve" it? Has she ever been short on cash? Did she "deserve" it? Has she ever loved someone who died? Did they "deserve" it?
